With the emergence of social media, it’s now easier than ever to get in touch with your audience and know what they’re thinking. Long gone are the days where mass media ruled, and only those with large pocket books could play. Now, a kid with enough of a following, can earn a living with a simple tweet.

It’s important to know though, that just because you have a large number of followers, doesn’t automatically make them do whatever you want. Like anything in life, you must give first in order to receive. Build up value and relationships with each one of your followers in order to then ask them to give you something in return. How do you build up relationships? Just follow these 3 easy tips.

1) Respond to EVERY SINGLE COMMENT

Yes, this will take a ton of time. But your audience will appreciate knowing that their comment was not lost in the fray and that you actually took the time to read and respond. After all, they took time out of their lives to respond to you in the first place. The least you can do, is return the favor.

2) Send Private Messages

If a few of your followers stand out to you as your hardcore fans, send them a private message to let them know that you notice them and that you appreciate them for all that they do to bring value to your discussions. Private messages allow you also to get to know them on a deeper level to not only build up a relationship with them, but to also gain a deeper understanding on how they’ve been led to you. If you can understand the commonalities between your hardcore fans, you can then strategize on how to find more of them.

3) Comment on Other Posts

Find those followers that seem interesting to you, and comment and like their posts on their pages. Start up conversations and discussions on their posts to bring value to their profile. This will keep those followers coming back to your page to continue the cycle, and also exposes you to new potential followers on their page.

All this takes time, but in the end, you will have made the experience with your business or brand richer. And by increasing the value that you bring to your followers, it will allow you then to ask them to buy. The key to all of this is be genuine in all of your interactions. If your fans sense that you have ulterior motives, it will backfire. So just be authentic when you’re asking Sally, “How are you today?”. Your fans will appreciate it.
